1394b for Aerospace Systems

Current and future aerospace systems rely on 1394b AS5643 networks for critical operations involving high-speed communications and isochronous real-time data transfer. 1394b AS5643 provides a fast, deterministic, and reliable communications network for military and aerospace vehicle systems. The protocol supports point-to-point, daisy chain, tree, and multiple loop connections. Fault tolerance is seamlessly achieved by using looped connections, where traffic is dispatched in the direction of the shortest path toward its destination.

All products are purpose-built to provide port-dense and SWaP-optimized solutions with superior bandwidth and latency performance. Each 1394b AS5643 board-level product is delivered with the customers chosen 1394b AS5643 FPGA IP loaded on the board (OHCI, GP2Lynx, AS5643 Offload), and an optional software development framework package that provides FPGA tools for customers to add additional functionality (if desired).

New Wave DV has developed a FPGA-based IP suite for supporting the 1394b AS5643 protocol. This suite of IP is what enables New Wave DV to provide full 1394b AS5643 hardware offload including hardware-based STOF handling, AS6543 label lookups, and hardware DMA controllers. The IP suite also allows for achieving port density and SWaP profiles not available previously. New Wave DV has provided solutions providing up to 4 nodes and 12 ports of 1394b AS5643 in a single chip. Solutions that have previously required 9 or more chips are now being provided in one chip of equal size, a reduction in board space of almost 10-to-1.

V1142 Quad-Port XMC Card

New Wave DV’s V1142 card is a 1394b AS5643 solution in a XMC (VITA 42) form factor. Utilizing only one FPGA chip for the 1394b AS5643 implementation, the V1142 offers higher port density (four front panel transformer coupled ports) than similar three- or four-chip processors, along with reduced size, weight, and power requirements. The V1142 FPGA provides highly-advanced bus control, diagnostic, interface, and customization capabilities for aerospace systems.

V1144 12-Port XMC Card

Specially engineered for high-density 1394b AS5643 test interface applications, New Wave DV’s V1144 PMC/XMC card provides 12 transformer coupled front panel ports on a single high-density connector. The V1144 offers multiple host interface options and can be configured in various node-to-port patterns for versatile performance in a range of aerospace applications. Customers have been able to consolidate what historically has required 4 or more interface stands into a single test stand using the V1144 card.

V1146 9-Port XMC Card

The V1146 is a high port density rugged 1394b AS5643 interface solution in an industry standard XMC (VITA 20) form factor. The V1146 offers nine backplane (Pn6) transformer-coupled 1394b IO ports and a Gen2x4 PCIe host processor interface. High port density and low size, weight, and power are achieved by using a single FPGA to implement the 1394b AS5643 protocol stack. The V1146 is capable of operating as 4 independent 1394b nodes within a single device, and the number of ports allocated to each node can be configured by the application. The FPGA based solution also delivers bus control, diagnostics information, interface choices, and customization options not previously available.

V5054 30-Port PCIe Card

Specially engineered for high-density 1394b AS5643 test interface applications, New Wave DV’s V5054 PCIe card provides 30 transformer coupled front panel ports on a single high density connector. The V5054 offers multiple host interface options and can be configured in various node-to-port patterns for versatile performance in a range of aerospace applications. Customers have been able to consolidate what historically has required 15 or more interface stands into a single test stand using the V5054 card.

1394b AS5643 IP Cores

1394b PHY Core

The 1394b PHY core provides a complete IP solution for the PHY layer of the 1394b protocol. The core includes all functionality needed to meet the 1394b specification including: comma alignment, 8b/10b encode/decode, primitive decode, scrambling, port state machine, connection manager, arbitration controller, elastic FIFO, and phase FIFO. At the physical layer, the core is built for connecting to FPGA/ASIC embedded SERDES, discrete SERDES parts, or general purpose IO. This core is targeted towards applications in aerospace and industrial vision, and has been used on a wide range of FPGA families at varying operating rates.

1394b OHCI Link Layer Core

The 1394b OHCI core provides a complete IP solution for the OHCI layer of the 1394b AS5643 protocol. The core includes all functionality needed to meet the AS5643 specification including: Asynchronous Transmit, Isochronous Receive, STOF handling, STOF regulated transmit functions, Self ID, and CRC generation/checking. New Wave DV has a set of standard form-factor boards featuring FPGAs, 1394b connectors and transformers, and off-the-shelf reference designs for quick evaluation of the OHCI IP core.

1394b GP2Lynx Link Layer Core

The 1394b GP2Lynx core provides a complete IP solution for the GP2Lynx Link Layer of the 1394b protocol. The core includes all functionality needed to meet the AS5643 specification including: Asynchronous Transmit, Isochronous Receive, STOF handling, STOF regulated transmit functions, and CRC generation/checking. New Wave DV has a set of standard form-factor boards featuring FPGAs, 1394b connectors and transformers, and off-the-shelf reference designs for quick evaluation of the IP core.

1394b AS5643 Offload Engine Core

The 1394b AS5643 Offload Engine Core provides hardware based AS5643 message label filtering, hardware mapping of AS5643 message label to host memory, and complete offload of 1394b AS5643 message handling including: Asynchronous Transmit, Isochronous Receive, STOF receive/transmit handling, STOF regulated transmit functions, Self ID operations, vertical parity, and CRC generation/checking.
